Joy to the World

Additional Texts

Sussex Carol

On Christmas night all Christians sing,
to hear the news the angels bring;
news of great joy, news of great mirth.
news of our merciful King’s birth.

Then why should men on earth be sad,
since our Redeemer made us glad;
when from our sin he set us free,
all for to gain our liberty.

When sin departs before his grace
then life and health come in its place.
Angels and men with joy may sing,
all for to see the newborn King.

All out of darkness we have light,
which made the angels sing this night;
“Glory to God in highest heaven
Now and for evermore,” Amen!

The First Noel

The first Noel, the angels did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields where they lay,
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east beyond them far.
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heav’nly Lord,
That hath made heav’n and earth of naught,
And with His blood mankind hath bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King, Noel!

Noel, Noel,
Born is the King,
Noel, Noel.

O Come Let Us Adore Him

O come, come! Come let us adore Him.
Let us adore Him.
O come!

When blossoms flowered ‘mid the snows
Upon a winter night,
Was born the Child, the Christmas Rose,
The King of Love and Light.
The angels sang, the shepherds sang,
The grateful earth rejoiced;
And at His blessed birth the stars
Their exultation voiced.
O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

O come, come! Come let us adore Him.
Let us adore Him.
Again the heart with rapture glows
To greet the holy night,
That gave the world its Christmas Rose,
Its King of Love and Light.
Let ev’ry voice acclaim His name,
The grateful chorus swell.
From paradise to earth He came
That we with Him might dwell.
O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
O come let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Oo. O come let us adore Him.
Oo. Adore Him, Christ the Lord.
O come! O come!
O come let us adore Him.
Adore Him Christ the Lord.
Adore Him Christ the Lord.
Let us adore Him.
O come!

Fum, Fum, Fum

On this joyful Christmas Day
sing fum, fum, fum.
On this joyful Christmas Day
sing fum, fum, fum.
For a blessed Babe was born upon this day
at the break of morn;
in a manger poor and lowly
lay the Son of God most holy.
Fum, fum, fum.

Give thanks to God this holy day;
sing fum, fum, fum.
Give thanks to God this holy day;
sing fum, fum, fum.
Now we all our voices raise
and sing a song of grateful praise.
Celebrate in song and story
All the wonders of His glory.
Fum, fum, fum.

Birds that live within the forest,
fum, fum, fum.
Birds that live within the forest,
fum, fum, fum.
All you fledgling leave behind,
and seek the Infant Savior kind.
Build, as well as you are able,
downy nest to be His cradle;
fum, fum, fum!

Praise we now the Lord above;
sing fum, fum, fum.
Praise we now the Lord above;
sing fum, fum, fum.
For upon this day at morn
the wondrous Son of God was born.
In a manger poor and lowly
lay the Blessed Babe most holy.
Fum, fum, fum!
Fum, fum, fum!
Fum, fum, fum!
Fum, fum, fum, fum!

Who am I, O Child of Wonder?

Who am I, o child of wonder,
to receive you as my own?
All this night my heart has pondered
what great love our God has shown.
You have come to me in darkness,
In the deepest hour of night.
Now you come, and turn my darkness into light.
Who are you, o child of glory?
Prophets have foretold your birth.
Now the shepherds come to greet you,
Angels sing of peace on earth.
Will you lead us out of darkness,
Walk with us through deepest night?
Have you come to bless the earth with heaven’s light?
Here he lies, his bed a manger,
Holy child, who is God’s own.
Fast asleep, a tiny stranger,
Far from heaven’s glorious throne.
Yet the kings of earth now fear him;
Wise men seek him from afar.
Who is he that shines bright as the Morning Star?
He is Christ, the Prince of Peace,
whose law is Love, whose way is Joy.
Light that overcomes all darkness,
Life that death cannot destroy.
Now he shines, the long-expected,
Now he comes, with us to dwell.
He is Christ, our God-with-us, Emmanuel.

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

It came upon a midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold.
“Peace on the earth, good-will to men
from Heav’ns all gracious King!”
The world in solemn stillness lay
to hear the angels sing.

All ye beneath life’s crushing load,
whose forms are bending low,
who toil along the climbing way
with painful steps and slow.
Oh, look, now, for glad and golden hours
come swiftly on the wing.
Oh, rest beside the weary road
and hear the angels sing.

For lo! the days are hast’ning on,
by prophets seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years
shall come the time foretold!
When peace shall over all the earth
its ancient splendors fling,
and the world send back the song
which now the angels sing.

Magnificat

My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in my God.
I will tell of His mercy,
I will tell of the mercies of my God.
My soul magnifies the Lord!

For the Mighty One has done
great things for me,
and holy is His name;
And His mercy is on those
who fear Him
from generation to generation.

Casting down the mighty
from their thrones,
and lifting up the lowly,
He has helped His servant, Israel
In remembrance of His mercy.

My soul magnifies the Lord.
I will tell of His greatness,
will tell of the greatness of my God.
My soul magnifies the Lord!

Coventry Carol

Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully, lullay.
O sisters too,
How may we do
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling,
For whom we do sing,
By by, lully, lullay?

Herod, the king,
In his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might,
In his own sight
All young children to slay.

That woe is me,
Poor child for thee!
And ever mourn and day,
For thy parting neither say nor sing
By by, lully, lullay.

Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully, lullay.

Sing We Now of Christmas

Sing we now of Christmas,
Noel sing we here.
Hearts in expectation,
Noel drawing near.
Sing we Noel, Noel, Noel;
sing we now of Christmas,
Sing we now Noel.

In stillness lays the world
in silent reverie;
longing for the birth of love and mercy.
Yearning for hope, good news to fill our souls;
turning to the manger that grounds all mystery.
Noel!

Angels bending low, shepherds bend their knee,
Wise-men from the east, all have come the child to see.
All of creation where love has come to dwell;
Sing we now of Christmas,
the good news that we tell.
Sing Noel! Sing Noel!
Sing Noel!

Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind

Blow, blow, thou winter wind,
Blow, blow, thou winter wind.

Thou art not so unkind as man’s ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.
Oh, Heigh-ho! Sing, heigh-ho! Unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then, heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky.

That dost not bite so nigh as benefits forgot:
Tho’ thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As friend remember’d not.
Oh, Heigh-ho! Sing, heigh-ho! Unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then, heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.

Blow, blow, thou winter wind.
Oh, blow, blow, thou winter wind.
This life is most jolly!

In the Bleak Midwinter

In the bleak mid-winter,
frosty wind made moan;
earth stood hard as iron,
water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow,
snow on snow,
in the bleak mid-winter
long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him
nor earth sustain;
heav’n and earth shall flee away
when he comes to reign:
in the bleak mid-winter
a stable-place sufficed
the Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.

Angels and archangels
may have gathered there;
cherubim and seraphim
thronged the air;
but his mother only,
in her maiden bliss,
worshiped the beloved
with a kiss.

What can I give him,
poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd,
I would bring a lamb;
if I were a wise man
I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him:
give my heart.

Ding Dong! Merrily on High

Ding dong! Merrily on high,
in heav’n the bells are ringing!
Ding dong! Verily the sky
is riv’n with angels singing!
Gloria, hosanna in excelsis!

E’en so; here below, below,
let steeple bells be swungen;
And i-o, i-o, i-o,
by priest and people sungen.
Gloria, hosanna in excelsis!

Pray you, dutifully prime
your matin chime, ye ringers;
may you beautifully rime
your eve-time song, ye singers.
Gloria, hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria!

Shine for Me Again, Star of Bethlehem

The night was long, we traveled far.
at times I looked, but could not see the star,
yet still, it shone unveiling then
the way to Bethlehem.

My heart held fear ‘mid puzzled joy,
For I was only a small shepherd boy,
And on a hillside soft and green
I heard an angel sing.

I saw the midnight sky aflame with
radiant angels bathed in light, holy light,
Bringing word that Christ is born
And beckoning to find Him, go and find Him.

A sweeter face I ne’er will see
than of those loving eyes smiling up at me;
I found a King, I found a friend
that night in Bethlehem.

But life goes on, years beyond one brief night of my youth.
Time clouds my vision of truth.
And though I stumble and fall I can hear someone call,
“Do not despair, your star is still there.”

That Christmas night so long ago
has filled my life with light because I know
That He lives now as He did then,
A King in Bethlehem,
Whose love never ends.
Shine for me again,
Star of Bethlehem.

He Is Born!

He is born, the divine Christ Child;
play the musette an the bagpipe merrily!
He is born, the divine Christ Child;
sing we all of the Savior mild.

Through long ages of the past,
prophets long have foretold His coming;
through long ages of the past,
now the time has come at last!

He is born, the divine Christ Child;
play the musette an the bagpipe merrily!
He is born, the divine Christ Child;
sing we all of the Savior mild.

O, how lovely, O how pure
is this perfect Child of heaven;
Oh how lovely, O how pure,
gracious gift to human-kind!

He is born, the divine Christ Child;
play the musette an the bagpipe merrily!
He is born, the divine Christ Child;
sing we all of the Savior mild.

Jesus, Lord of all the world,
coming as a Child among us,
Jesus, Lord of all the world,
grant to us Thy heav’nly peace.

He is born, the divine Christ Child;
play the musette an the bagpipe merrily!
He is born, the divine Christ Child;
sing we all of the Savior mild.

Sing we now, the divine Christ Child!

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
‘round yon virgin mother and child!
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night!
Son of God, Love’s pure light,
Radiant, beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Silent night, holy night!
Wondrous star lend thy light.
With the angels let us sing
“Alleluia” to our King,
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.
